Teen Volunteer Program

In the past year, the Teen Volunteers at Jennie Edmundson Hospital have completed more than 12,500 of community service, which is roughly equivalent to six years of paid working time.  They are a very vital part of the hospital's everyday function.

Jennie Edmundson is one of the few hospitals allowing Teen Volunteers to actually have patient contact without adult supervision.  This is a privilege that we are proud of and we continue to work very hard to maintain.  While working on the floors, teens are responsible for charting the amount of water that the patient consumes before refilling the pitcher, stocking closets, restocking towels and linens, visiting with patients, escorting patients to various parts of the hospital, running errands and helping the nurses.  However, they will not be asked to perform any nursing duties.  Other duties of a Teen Volunteer include working at the Information Desks, answering phones, directing visitors, stocking the pop cooler in the Gift Shop, and delivering newspapers to patients, guests, and employees.

The Teen Volunteer Program also provides leadership opportunities as well as fundraising, public relations, human resources and creative design experiences.  The program helps teens learn new skills and gain the responsibility and accountability that they will need to be successful.

How Can I Become a Teen Volunteer?

  1. Click to download and complete the Teen Volunteer Application and Parent Consent Form
  2. Sign up for Orientation by contacting the Teen Volunteer Coordinator, Amber Hawk, at 712-396-7733 or by e-mail amber.hawk@nmhs.org.
  3. Attend the Orientation Session and sign up for your volunteer shift.  We have shifts everyday, including the weekend, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm and a Saturday morning shift from 11:30am to 1:30pm.  Teen Volunteers work their designated shift each week.  If you are going to miss your shift you must call the Teen Volunteer Coordinator at 712-396-7733.
  4. Following Orientation you will be required to have a Health Screening through the Employee Health nurse.  You will be asked to schedule an appointment to have this done.  The Health Screening consists of a health questionnaire, vital signs, review of immunizations and a TB test.  The Employee Health nurse will notify the Teen Volunteer Coordinator when you are clear to begin your training.
  5. During the seven week training period you will be required to wear Khaki-colored pants and a white t-shirt under a navy vest.  You will learn "hands on" the tasks that the Teen Volunteers are involved with and will be paired with another teen volunteer who will teach you the different responsibilities.  Following the seven week probationary period, a written test will be given to ensure competency in all service areas.  Upon successful completion of the exam, you will be accepted as a full-fledged Teen Volunteer and must purchase your navy polo shirt for $10 to complete your uniform.
  6. Individuals involved in extracurricular activies are allowed a three month Leave of Absence (LOA) during which time they will be excused from their shift.  A LOA form must be filled out and returned to the Teen Volunteer Coordinator. A LOA cannot be taken until completion of the seven weeks of "hands on" training.
