Jennie Edmundson Hospital Cancer Center

Early in the 1990’s Jennie Edmundson Hospital recognized a need to provide a coordinated approach to cancer care to obtain optimum results.  Through the collaborative efforts of our many outstanding specialists, advanced diagnostic equipment and access to the latest treatment protocols, patients of the Cancer Center receive the best care possible.

Cancer Center Receives National Recognition

The Cancer Center received national recognition in 2009 by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons for demonstrating a Commendation level of compliance with six standards that represent five areas of cancer program activity:  cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, research, community outreach, and quality improvement. In addition, facilities must receive a compliance rating for the remaining 30 cancer program standards.  Eighty-two programs, including Jennie Edmundson, received the Outstanding Achievement Award as a result of surveys performed in 2009 representing approximately 18% of the 432 programs surveyed during this period.

Cancer Center Registrar

"Most patients don't realize that there's a group of professionals who help guide every cancer care plan. Every day I come into work knowing what I do makes a big difference for medical staff here, but more importantly for the patients in their care."

Patty Mullen
Registrar, Cancer Center

The Jennie Edmundson Foundation is committed to funding the Cancer Center Registrar Program. By establishing an endowment we demonstrate our support of this vital position. The Cancer Registrar serves as the communication hub for the patient when collecting and communicating pertinent information. The registrar is responsible for recording treatment plans, tumor size and outcomes to state and national registries.  This position is integral in coordinating the weekly Cancer Conference where all newly diagnosed cancer patients are presented.

Cancer Conference

The JEH Cancer Center uses an integrated model of care which offers its patients a coordinated team approach to evaluation, treatment and follow-up. Organized by the registrar, a team of medical professionals gather every Friday with the goal to outline the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient. Data provided to state and national registries is used to track outcomes and to assure compliance with national standards of care.

Since 1996 Jennie Edmundson Hospital has received approval from the CoC by meeting program standards, providing support and education, and delivering quality care to its patients.  This approval reflects that the patients in southwest Iowa can look to Jennie Edmundson Hospital for comprehensive care close to home.  The staff at Jennie Edmundson remains focused on serving their patients with advanced techniques and highly personalized care.
